What should Logitech do to convince with its console dedicated to cloud gaming?

Logitech intends to launch a portable console whose particularity will be to run games in streaming. Compatibility with the Xbox Game Pass (Microsoft) and GeForce Now (Nvidia) services is already assured.

Cloud gaming is giving rise to ideas among some. In a press release published on August 2, the props company Logitech announced a partnership with the Tencent conglomerate with the aim of launching a new portable console. It will not be a competitor to Valve’s Steam Deck, but a fairly new machine dedicated to streaming games.

On the one hand, there is therefore the hardware know-how of Logitech. On the other, the software expertise — and the financial power — of Tencent. The duo is aiming for a release this year and intends to offer a console compatible with the two main cloud gaming services available today: Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass and GeForce Now, offered by Nvidia.

What should Logitech do to convince with its portable console?

1 — Focus on ergonomics

By focusing only on a catalog of games in cloud gaming, which is moreover provided by others, Logitech does not need to cover its console with state-of-the-art components. Streaming does not require immense computing power to operate and can be satisfied with a very modest technical sheet. In this sense, Logitech’s product will not need to be used at Valve’s Steam Deck.

Logitech will therefore be able to concentrate its efforts on ergonomics, which will really have to be impeccable. To seduce on this point, the console must meet these criteria:

  • A screen with a comfortable definition for the eyes (if possible in OLED);
  • Measurements neither too narrow nor too big to suit a maximum of morphologies;
  • Well-placed buttons;
  • Durable finishes since it is a product to be transported everywhere.

Logitech cannot miss the ergonomics of the car, today, smartphones are able to offer a more than appreciable experience with accessories dedicated to gaming. Its device must be more made than a gaming smartphone.

2 — Autonomy must be irreproachable

If we do not expect disproportionate power from this console, we still hope for autonomy capable of lasting hours and hours without problem. It has to do better than the Nintendo Switch and the Steam Deck, which struggle to deliver more than five hours of playtime (length depends on usage). Again, Logitech has to compete with phones whose battery life is only getting better.

In the other purely technical characteristics to watch, the Logitech console must:

  • Ensure impeccable connectivity, including 4G/5G (because you have to be able to play outside your home without access to a Wi-Fi hotspot);
  • Manage any overheating issues.

3 — Games

Gamers can play AAA games when away from their console or PC »: this is the promise of Tencent and Logitech. The duo has already approached Microsoft and Nvidia so that their respective service has become compatible. This is already good news. As for Stadia, nothing seems to have been signed for the moment.

4 — The price

How much are we willing to pay for a console that only streams video games, that is to say that doubles with other devices that we already own? This is the thorny question that Logitech will have to answer. Quite frankly, we would probably not invest more than 200 € for such a platform, certainly interesting, but still very limited. Moreover, Logitech should not offer too many superfluous features, simply there to justify a higher price. Nobody wants an Android terminal capable of downloading applications, it’s called a smartphone. Logitech’s product must really have something new.
