The Verson SPA refuge, near Caen, is celebrating its 25th anniversary. For the occasion, it is organizing two open days on October 1 and 2, 2022.

The Verson animal shelter is located 11km from Caen, along the A84. Opened in 1997, it has 45 boxes for dogs and a cattery with 18 cages. The recognized association of public utility operates with five employees and around thirty volunteers.

The refuge is open to the public in the afternoons only from 2 p.m., every day except Sunday. The mornings are reserved for the five employees. Four trainers and a receptionist who every day bring life to this house dedicated to pets. Every morning, the keepers are busy in the boxes to feed the cats and dogs, take care of their little sores and clean their habitats.

For 22 years, every day, I have taken care of the cats and dogs who find temporary shelter here. I feed them, I clean their cage and change the litter and often I take care of their little health problem. They have pills to take sometimes for a treatment given by the veterinarian.

Employee of the Verson refuge

The work is not lacking for the four healers of the refuge. Since the beginning of 2022, the Verson SPA has welcomed 539 cats and 330 dogs. Abandoned or stray animals brought in by the pound. The refuge is full and the days are busy.

If the refuge is full, it is also because a new breed of residents has appeared. The New Pets (NAC). In other words, rabbits, mice, ferrets and other guinea pigs. The shelter welcomed 73 last year and 50 already, since the beginning of 2022.

Every afternoon, the employees of the refuge receive the reinforcement of four or five volunteers. Retirees or young working people come to help walk the dogs for half an hour each. An essential outing for doggies who spend most of their time in the boxes.

It would take a lot more to ensure longer walks for the hundreds of dogs who are waiting with sad eyes for a master.

About thirty volunteers who help us walk the dogs. It would take a lot more to get them out an hour or two and not 30 minutes. Retired people come to help us on weekdays and a few working people on weekends. This is an important moment for the animals, which remain locked in their boxes the rest of the time.

The Verson refuge (Calvados) also benefits from the help of volunteer host families. These are people who take in abandoned cats or dogs who are waiting for vaccines or special care. Puppies or kittens that need to be bottle fed are often placed in foster homes. The animals stay ten days with their adoptive parents.

Marie, a student in Caen, has been welcoming cats for two years now in her small 18 m² studio. ” I have always had cats in my family. In my small studio, I’m a bit alone and since I can’t adopt a cat because it’s a long commitment and I’m going to move around in the years to come, I tell myself that it’s a good compromise..

To survive financially, the Verson shelter relies heavily on help from individuals. Totally independent, it finances its budget with donations from individuals, association memberships and adoptions. But it is above all the legs that make the difference.

People who die give us legs that allow us to invest. In Verson, on a new integrated cat flap thanks in particular to the silver legs. Open days are also important for raising funds through adoptions and memberships.

Vanessa Pecullo

President of the Verson SPA

The Verson refuge is organizing open days on October 1 and 2, 2022. The opportunity to have as many animals as possible adopted, but be careful, taking a dog or a cat is a commitment. ” In recent years, the animal has become a consumer product. An animal is between 10 and 20 years old and often, at the slightest difficulty, abandons it. There are situations that we can understand, but still“, ignites Vanessa Pecullo.
