The prostate, its chic and shocking underwear

The prostate, we do not see it, we do not feel it, so what is this gland that is part of the male reproductive system for? Why, often after 50 years, can it be a problem? Are there risky behaviors? While the prostate still keeps mysteries, we are going to discover them in our weekly podcast Everything is explained with Professor Georges Fournier, urological surgeon, president of the French association of urology (AFU). This association launched the awareness campaign against prostate cancer “I roll against prostate cancer”. This will end with the ascent of Mont Ventoux (Vaucluse), by bike, on September 17, 2022. The participants will be patients and doctors, guided by former champion Bernard Hinault.

How is the prostate mysterious?

In this episode, the doctor begins by defining the prostate, locating it, explaining its function, before listing possible concerns. The adenoma of the prostate results in an enlargement of the prostate. “It is a mysterious disease, although very common. It will affect 90% of men as they age. (…) We do not know the cause, even if on some tracks, ”underlines the urologist. “Over time, prostate adenoma will lead to urinary symptoms, difficulty in evacuating the bladder, getting up often at night or during the day, with very urgent urges to pee. This disease is perfectly benign and never degenerates,” recalls Georges Fournier.

As for prostate cancer, “it mainly affects men in their second part of life”, recalls the doctor, even if there are younger cases. Very common cancer, with 50,000 new cases per year, it causes “8,100 deaths per year, which is enormous”, underlines the urological surgeon. A person with a prostate in seven, or even eight, will be affected by this disease.

Screening with a simple blood test

“We heal quite well when it’s taken at the right time”, adds Georges Fournier, before recalling that the importance of screening, by a simple blood test prescribed by the doctor, to assess the “prostatic antigen level specific”, the “PSA”.

Scientific research is still ongoing to understand why certain populations are more susceptible than others to this disease. Why do people in Asia have fewer prostate cancers? Why is northern Europe more affected than southern Europe?

“The prostate, you have to forget it before the age of 50”

Finally, Georges Fournier mentions prostatitis, the symptoms of which generally manifest themselves by “urinary burns, chills like the flu, 40° fever, urinary disorders. You go to the doctor who will do some analyzes for you, prescribe some options, and everything will be back to normal. »

Are there risky behaviors? Are certain sexual practices bad for the prostate? “The prostate should be forgotten before the age of 50. (…) Let’s live young, quiet, ”advises Professor Georges Fournier.
