The 32nd crab festival is this Sunday, August 7 in Plouarzel – Plouarzel

Jaoua Simon, since when have you been a volunteer for the Plouarzel crab festival, the 32nd edition of which takes place this Sunday, August 7, 2022 in Plouarzel, and why this choice?

Jaoua Simon, head of the “cleaners” team at the Plouarzel crab festival: “I’ve been there since the beginning, when the municipal tourist office replaced the tourist office. A simple choice: participate in the animation of local life”.

When did you take the position of leader of the “cleaners” team and do you comment on this beautiful mechanic?

“I took the job in the second or third year. The crab preparation workshop is made up of about thirty volunteers: three supply and keep the site clean, three others work on the cleaning chains, each made up of one person who separates the shell from the body, without removing the clamps or the legs, of six people who clean the body and shells, another who reconstitutes the crab and a last who reserves them in the fridge. They are now ready to be tasted! Preparation begins Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m. and ends around noon, with a twenty-minute break in the middle. The first or second year, it took more than forty people and it lasted until 3-4 p.m.! All the claws and all the legs were broken with a hammer and the bodies cut in half. Or, with the current method, the reconstituted crab really does look like crab! The guests break claws and legs with tongs that they tune themselves or that they rent on the spot. There is less waste! Before, 80% of claws and legs ended up in the trash…”.

How do you find the party atmosphere? What is your best memory ?

“The atmosphere is excellent because this festival brings together volunteers from the various associations of the municipality and contributes to a certain solidarity of the social fabric. The most memorable memory for me was the year when it rained all day. A real deluge! We were in big tents, we had recovered pallets so as not to have our feet in the mud. And we sang to drown out the noise of the rain and the hammers. From time to time, it was necessary to take a broom to remove the pockets of water which were created on the roofs of the capitals. Paradoxically, all the crabs had been sold by 5 p.m. that year.”

You are very invested. What is your background in volunteering?

“I took part in the inter-districts in 1980. When they stopped, I took part, in 1992, in the creation of Trézien Détente, which organized a petanque tournament in summer, the ham on the bone at the end of August , visits to the Trézien lighthouse. From 1984, I worked at Plouarzel Basket. In 1992, as the minimal team was rising in the region, I created an animation commission in order to find the financing to maintain this team at this level, hence the first lotto of the club which was held every year. , before being unfortunately interrupted due to the health crisis, but it will resume! I was also part of the creation of the municipal tourist office, now replaced by Plouarzel Animation”.
