Tadej Pogacar wins the 5th stage, ahead of Matej Mohoric, and the general classification of the Tour of Slovenia

No “shifumi” this time. The day after a victory left to his teammate Rafal Majka, Tadej Pogacar had to work to the end to win this Sunday in Novo mesto. The duo from the UAE Emirates team was accompanied by a sacred client, in the person of the Slovenian Matej Mohoric, whom Pogacar narrowly beat in the sprint, to win the 5th stage of the Tour of Slovenia. He also won the general classification of his national tour, twelve days before the Grande Boucle.

As during the five days of racing, Pogacar gave the impression of doing what he wanted this Sunday. Or almost. A 1.3 km long climb with an average gradient of 10.6%, despite a flat area, allowed him to scatter the peloton, about ten terminals from the finish. Only Mohoric (Bahrain-Victorious) managed to resist him. In the descent, specialty of the winner of Milan-Sanremo, it is… again Pogacar who attacked. But the two men could not decide and Rafal Majka stuck again.

A sprint, a real one: comment Pogacar beat Mohoric

Majka finds the skin of the teammate

The trio took turns, in particular to avoid the return of the fast Luka Mezgec (BikeExchange-Jayco, 4th at 26″). Then Majka, 2nd in the general classification, played the role of pure teammate. This testified to the desire of the double winner coming out of the Tour de France to complete his coronation. He succeeded despite the good resistance of Mohoric, who launched the first in this sprint on an uphill false flat. Domen Novak (Bahrain-Victorious) finished in the group settled by Mezgec, thus preserving his third place overall.

Pogacar completes this Tour of Slovenia – his recovery race since his 12th place at the Flèche wallonne on April 20 – with two stages in the bag and, therefore, the final victory. It looked like a formality for the defending champion, who opted for a very different path from that of Primoz Roglic, his announced rival for the Grande Boucle, who chose to prepare for the Critérium du Dauphiné… which he has won. They have an appointment on the Tour (July 1-24) to explain themselves.
