PSG: to extend, Mbappé signs the biggest contract in the history of sport

At the end of the contract last June, Kylian Mbappé decided to extend for three additional years, including one optional, in favor of Paris Saint-Germain. To convince the French striker to stay in the capital, the Ile-de-France leaders simply offered him the biggest deal in the history of sport.

Mbappé has signed a fabulous new contract with PSG.

A several-month-long soap opera that ended on May 21, 2022. Moments before the reception of Metz (5-0), counting for the 38th day of the last exercise, Kylian Mbapp (23) extended his contract, which expired in June, in favor of Paris Saint-Germain.

Long announced leaving for Real Madrid, the French striker has chosen to continue his adventure in his hometown. To retain it, the leaders logically had to pass the checkout. Exceed all limits.

72 M€ salary per year

According to information from the daily Le Parisien, the tricolor world champion has simply signed the biggest deal in the history of sport. This relates to a two-year lease, i.e. until June 2024, plus an optional season. An option that only the player can exercise. Moreover, and contrary to what is done regularly, there is no clause linked to sports results. Whether he wins the Champions League with Paris, whether he is Ballon d’Or next year (or the next) will not change anything he will touch says the newspaper.

How much Mbappé has received since July 1? 72 million euros gross over the year. Or 6 million euros gross per month (2.7 million net after tax). Around three times more than he earned last season , assures Le Parisien. In addition to his salary, the bondy crack negotiated a signing bonus of 180 million euros gross paid in three installments of 60 million euros. Can you follow? Between salaries, over three years, and the signing bonus, PSG will have to release 396 million euros. But the madness doesn’t stop here.

A total of… €636m over 3 years

Indeed, Mbapp also benefits from a loyalty bonus towards the end of each summer transfer window if it is still there . The first, which he must therefore have received, is 70 million euros gross. The second, scheduled for September 2023, would be around 80 million euros. And if the world champion lifts the option of a third year, and he is therefore still Parisian in September 2024 after the Games, PSG would pay him 90 million euros , adds the newspaper. Or 240 million euros more if the contract goes until June 2025.

All in all, the reigning French champion could therefore pay up to 636 million euros if Mbapp remains in the workforce until the summer of 2025. Of this sum, 45% goes directly to the player’s pocket after taxation, i.e. 286.2 million euros. This only corresponds to his eventual income without taking into account the profits he will recover from his sponsors (Nike, Hublot, EA Sport, Dior, Oakley, etc.). In the year (212 M€), this is equivalent to… a quarter of the club’s budget.

Far ahead of US sports stars

In the history of the sport, no one boxed in the category of Mbappé. The four-year contract signed by Lionel Messi in 2017 amounted to 555 million euros at FC Barcelona, i.e., the year (138.75 M€), 73.25 million euros less. On the podium, we find one of the stars of American football, Patrick Mahomes, whose ten-year commitment in 2010 with the Kansas City Chiefs cost 510 million euros.

Floyd Mayweather (30 months, Boxing/Showtime, €456m), Mike Trout (12 years, Baseball/LA Angels, €432m), Canelo Alvarez (5 years, Boxing/DAZN, €370m), Mookie Betts (12 years, Baseball/LA Dodgers, €370 million), Francisco Lindor (10 years, Baseball/MY Mets, €346 million), Fernando Tatis Jr (14 years, Baseball/San Diego Padres, €345 million) and Bryce Harper (13 years, Baseball/Philadelphia Phillies, €335m) complete the TOP 10. Proof that Mbappé has moved on to another dimension, even surpassing the stars of American sport.
