Mohammed VI in forced rest in his castle of Betz – Jeune Afrique

Arrived in France on June 1 for a private visit, the King of Morocco, Mohammed VI contracted Covid-19 in an asymptomatic form, said the personal doctor of the sovereign Lahcen Belyamani on June 16. “Therefore, the doctor prescribed a rest period for His Majesty the King for a few days,” according to the Moroccan News Agency (MAP) on June 16, 2022.

According to our information, it was in France that Mohammed VI contracted the virus, without the details filtering out on the precise circumstances of this contamination. The king of Morocco therefore remained in convalescence in his castle in the Oise – located in the town of Betz -, which his father Hassan II acquired in 1972.

Return to Morocco before July 13

Since the start of the health crisis, in 2020, and the successive confinements activated all over the world, the king had only made one visit abroad: in December 2021 to Gabon.

The date of his return to Morocco is not yet known, but the sovereign will preside over the ceremonies of Eid al-Adha in the kingdom, which will be held between July 9 and 13.

His convalescence obviously does not prevent Mohammed VI from working, since he has sent several messages since contracting the virus: to participants in the launch conference of the African Forum of Sovereign Investors, which is being held in Rabat, or even to Moroccan pilgrims traveling to Saudi Arabia for Hajj 2022.

Aged 58, Mohammed VI underwent two heart operations in recent years, the first on January 20, 2018 at the Ambroise Paré clinic in Paris, the second on June 14, 2020 at the Royal Palace clinic in Rabat.

Regular trials

His state of health has imposed increased control of his environment since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. His entourage is thus very regularly tested, even since the end of health restriction measures in Morocco, considered particularly heavy by part of the population, and in particular tourism operators.

Since the announcement of his doctor on June 16, Mohammed VI has received wishes for recovery from Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, and King Abdullah II of Jordan. The announcement also made it possible to confirm Lahcen Belyamani in his post, who unofficially succeeded Abdelaziz El Maaouni, the king’s doctor who has accompanied him since 1997, several months ago.
