Marco Odermatt wins the opening giant in Sölden, ahead of Zan Kranjec (2nd), Alexis Pinturault only 20th

Marco Odermatt is the first giant of the season. Could it be otherwise? Winner last season of the big crystal globe as well as the giant globe, the Swiss assumed his ultra-favorite status on Sunday in Sölden. First by knocking out the first round (41 hundredths ahead of Lucas Braathen). Then concluding without trembling, despite a fault at the entrance to the wall.

Pinturault: “Odermatt is the big favourite, the calendar the advantage”

The logical winner of this first stage of the World Cup in Austria, Marco Odermatt (25) was well ahead of Zan Kranjec (2nd, +0″76) and Henrik Kristoffersen (3rd, +0″97). Note on the French side the big disappointment of Alexis Pinturault. The Courchevel skier only finished twentieth, more than two seconds (+2.09) behind the untouchable Swiss.

Disillusionment for Pinturault, 20th: his second round on video

Sad first for Pinturault

Leaving with bib number 1 in the morning, the Habs, no doubt stressed after a very disappointing 2021-2022 exercise, had remained on reserve but had signed a (relatively) promising eighth place. He collapsed in the second run, meaning only the 25th fastest time of the 28 skiers to have crossed the line. For the first time in his career (in nine starts), the Courchevel skier did not finish in the Top 5 in Sölden.

Muffat-Jeandet, nice comeback

The balance sheet of the French team is nevertheless enhanced by the tenth and eleventh places of Thibaud Favrot and Victor Muffat-Jeandet. Returning to competition for the first time since his fibula fracture in January 2022, the latter is making an encouraged comeback. On the other hand, as for Alexis Pinturault, the disappointment is in order for the world champion of the specialty Romain Faivre, only 24th with his new equipment.

Ford moved up 20 places

Marco Odermatt thus scores the first 100 points of the season, while his runner-up from the previous year, Alexander Aamodt Kilde, made a mistake and thus left this first day empty-handed. Note the nice group shot of the Norwegians with Henrik Kristoffersen (3rd), Lucas Braathen (4th) and Rasmus Windingstad (5th). As well as the formidable comeback of the American Tommy Ford, best time of the second race and moved from 26th to 6th position.
