Georginio Wijnaldum should no longer play in the PSG jersey this season. Placed on the transfer list by the capital club, the 31-year-old Dutchman must commit to Roma in the coming hours in the form of a one-year loan with an option to buy €8m. which will be activated on two conditions: that the international midfielder plays half of the Italian club’s matches this season and that the latter qualifies for the 2023-2024 Champions League.
If these two conditions are met, Wijnaldum will then become linked to Roma for two more years, until June 2025. As revealed by the transalpine press on Thursday, PSG will cover 40% of the player’s salary this year. The latter is expected in Italy to finalize the deal, probably today or tomorrow.
Ongoing discussions for Gueye and Paredes
The two clubs had been in discussion for several weeks but the file stumbled on this point, Wijnaldum – who arrived free in Paris in the summer of 2021 – having a particularly generous salary (more than €900,000 gross monthly). The different parties made concessions to be able to complete the deal.
Dismissed from Christophe Galtier’s group for several weeks, Wijnaldum had immediately accepted the idea of bouncing elsewhere after losing his place in the national team. The coach of the Netherlands, Louis van Gaal, had explained to him that he would not play again under the Orange until he found a consistent and regular playing time at the club.
For its part, PSG continues to work to reduce its workforce. Discussions are underway for Idrissa Gueye (Everton) and Leandro Paredes (Juventus) but no agreement has yet been reached.
