After two years of absence due to Covid-19, the Bayonne festivities, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, are back this year. Residents and tourists intend to make the most of it.

Waking up is a bit abrupt. Every morning at 9 a.m., musicians sound the start of a new day of celebration in the streets of Bayonne (Pyrenees-Atlantiques). “It’s to wake people up. It’s so that people get up, enjoy the day, and don’t stay in bed excessively late having gone to bed very very late in the morning.testifies one of these musicians. Very quickly, there are thousands dancing to celebrate Basque traditions.

After two years of interruption due to Covid-19, the return of the Bayonne celebrations was eagerly awaited. “It’s a real treat to share moments of traditional dance”rejoices a participant. A successful recovery, as evidenced by an impressive crowd that covered the forecourt of the town hall with red and white from the opening of the festivities, Wednesday, July 27. In total, one million people are expected during these five days.
