This is a beauty contest, but also a conformity to the Husky breed. “It’s not enough to just have a nice head or a nice hairstyle to win this type of contest,” says Mr. Firetto. Dogs are judged on their beauty, but also on their musculature. They must have all the breed-specific characteristics to do the work of driving. The judges look at the proportions of the body, the height of the legs, the shape of the fingers, the hair, the shape of the eyes, the number of teeth, etc. Each breed of dog comes to its ideal and as breeders our job is to get as close to it as possible. »
In October, Antares will return to France to race sled dogs in the mountains, hoping to win the eventing competition, which includes compliance and harness work.
In some 20 years of career, four dogs from the breeding of Mr. Firetto have already won the eventing of the French Championship.
“Since the 1uh January I am also the best breeder in Mexico, thanks to my dog Pasha, emphasizes Mr. Firetto. I have been approached by Mexican breeders who are committed to raising the quality of their livestock. Pasha thus becomes an ambassador for my breeding. Having multiple dogs performing at different locations demonstrates uniformity and consistency in my selection. »
Dominique Firetto’s Trinacria breeding is part of the very select club of the best Huskies dog breedings in the world. This success, Mr. Firetto obtains it thanks to his great experience.
“I am 42 years old and I had my first litter at the age of 16, he illustrates. I can count on the hindsight of all these years. »
To supplement his herd, Mr. Firetto buys high quality male dogs from other breeders all over the world, as far away as the Philippines.
“I buy dogs that are already champions or youngsters that come from champions who have already proven themselves,” explains the resident of Saint-Jacques-le-Mineur. In each country, there are only two or three High breeders and I know them all. It’s like haute couture houses. We know their work and their approach. »
If breeding with a new dog brings characteristics that are not bred, the dogs resulting from this cross will be sterilized and then given to families to make good companion dogs.
Dog rescued from Ukraine
Always with the aim of improving his breeding, Mr. Firetto bought a female dog in Ukraine, at the end of 2019. He was supposed to participate in an exhibition at the beginning of 2020 and pick her up, but the borders were closed due to of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“With the start of the war with Russia, I no longer had any hope of bringing people in,” he said. People finally contacted me to say that they had found a lady who was to get dogs out of the country. It took her three days to get out of Ukraine via Poland, with her van. She did it at the risk of her life. She saved a dozen dogs. »
Mr. Firetto has established a drop-off point in Lyon, where his mother lives, who picked up the dog, named Harlem. After which, Mr. Firetto took possession of it, during his participation in the French Championship, with Antares.
“I saved this female dog and I’m very glad I did, he found. COVID and war, these Ukrainian breeders didn’t ask for that. She is now here, safe, and nothing more can happen to her. »
