Animal welfare: opening of a consultation on the “From farm to fork” guidelines

EFSA is launching an open consultation on the draft guidance methodology it will use for a series of scientific opinions on farm animal welfare.

The opinions, which will be published between June 2022 and March 2023, have been requested by the European Commission and form a key part of its Farm to Fork strategy. They will cover animal welfare during transport, as well as the on-farm welfare of specific species, i.e. calves, laying hens, broilers, pigs, ducks, geese and quail, as well as dairy cows.

The methodological guide defining harmonized methods and strategies to be applied consistently in all opinions. It lists and describes in particular the consequences of farming conditions, which are known to affect animals, on their well-being.

The document also includes a new methodology for assessing welfare by comparing the conditions animals face on farms with ‘natural’ conditions (for example, if they had unlimited space).

The consultation is open until March 31, 2022. Further sample details are available here.
