In this summer period, many animals are abandoned while adoptions drop sharply. A situation that worries the Ile-de-France refuges of the SPA.
Cats, dogs, but also guinea pigs, gerbils, rabbits… The SPA points out the many abandoned animals. “Across France, shelters are saturated. Sur relives, as in an era, massive departures on vacation“, explains Ninon Rueff, manager of the association’s refuge in Plaisir, in the Yvelines.
“These are very quiet periods in terms of adoptions, during the months of June, July and August. With, unfortunately, mass dropouts. So on many pending requests“, she continues.
“A lot of animals are abandoned on the public highway. Currently, pounds are saturated with dogs, cats and ‘NAC’: “new pets”, for example rabbits, hamsters or mice“, laments Ninon Rueff.
Last year in Île-de-France, the number of abandoned “NAC” increased by 86% according to the SPA. The association thus denounces a “worrying trend in constant progression“.
In 2021, the number of animals cared for by the SPA in the Paris region increased by 15% compared to the previous year. The association thus received 10,691 animals in its shelters in the Ile-de-France region. 9,682 animals were also adopted either at the regional level, i.e. 8% more than in 2020.
In Île-de-France, there are six SPA animal shelters. They performed in Gennevilliers (Hauts-de-Seine), Orgeval (Yvelines), Hermeray (Yvelines), Plaisir (Yvelines), Chamarande (Essonne) and Vaux-le-Pénil (Seine-et-Marne).
