A Federer-Nadal match to inaugurate the new Bernabeu?

At the tennis game, I love you and I’ll never leave you” With these words Roger Federer concluded the audio message announcing his future retirement from sport (after the Laver Cup) last week. The Swiss also assured that he would continue to play tennis, but “more in Grand Slam or on the circuit“. Seeing him play a few exhibitions in the years to come is therefore not unthinkable and some already seem ready to jump at the chance. This is particularly the case for the leaders of Real Madrid according to ESPN and the Spanish sports daily AS.

The latter thus relaunched the idea already mentioned for several months of organizing a match between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal as part of the inauguration of the renovated Santiago-Bernabéu stadium in the summer of 2023. The project would therefore be to scrap the two historic rivals (40 confrontations, 24-16 for the Spaniard) in front of nearly 80,000 spectators and thus beat the record for a tennis game set by the same two players in Cape Town on February 7, 2020 (51,954 spectators) in as part of a match organized for the Basel Foundation.

As of now, the supposed two have not confirmed their possible intention to participate in this exhibition, but there could be news on this subject in the wake of the Laver Cup (September 23-25) in London, last event in which Federer will participate.
